About The Quilt

4x4 Barn Quilt – North Trail

Note: Residence

The original Carpenters Square barn quilt was destroyed in 2023 when the barn was torn down. The barn quilt was designed with the carpenter’s square tool in mind and was built in 2012 by Lew Schmidt and painted by his wife Sue. Lew worked for Potter Lumber Company on Mill Street in LeRoy, which supplied the plywood for the barn quilt project. Carpenters Square was unique because it was constructed of lumber attached to plywood – almost three-dimensional.  Potter Lumber closed several years ago, and Lew passed away. The barn quilt remained a silent reminder of Lew’s dedication to the project.  When the original barn quilt was destroyed in 2023, Bruno DiFazio, a friend of Lew and Sue Schmidt decided to make a new barn quilt.  With the help of Allen Guilford and Lynne Belluscio, the new quilt was completed in the spring of 2024.  It is now displayed on a grey barn adjacent to the original location.
